About Us

The Sea Shanty isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a cornerstone of Cayucos’ charm and history. Nestled along Ocean Avenue across from Paul Andrew Park, this beloved spot has been serving up comfort food and heartfelt hospitality for over 40 years. Owned and lovingly nurtured by Carol Kramer and Bill Shea since 1983, the Sea Shanty has become a home away from home for locals and visitors alike.

From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the cozy ambiance of a dining room adorned with a sea of donated ball caps and a warm outdoor patio perfect for family gatherings. The food? It’s comfort at its best, created by Bill and his dedicated team in a kitchen where passion meets culinary expertise.

How It All Began

Carol and Bill’s journey to the Sea Shanty started as a bold leap of faith. Back in Newport Beach, Carol was a bartender and Bill a cook at Chuck’s Steakhouse. They dreamed of owning their own place, and fate led them to Cayucos. Though the building they found needed extensive work, the town’s magic inspired them to take the plunge.

“We hated the building,” Carol laughs, “but we woke up one morning and decided to do it.”
They moved in, remodeled, and opened just in time for Memorial Day weekend in 1983. Despite an overwhelming first weekend and the quiet that followed, they quickly found their rhythm. Over time, the restaurant grew into an iconic spot for comfort food, vibrant community gatherings, and an enduring sense of place.

A Family Affair

For Carol and Bill, the Sea Shanty is more than a business—it’s family. Over the decades, their children, grandchildren, and countless employees have become an extended family, with many returning every summer to work and share in the spirit of the restaurant. Today, their grandson Lucas leads the way, ensuring the Shanty remains a cherished, family-run establishment for generations to come.

A Little Bit of Magic

The Sea Shanty is known for its signature quirks, like the 1,700 hats hanging from the ceiling—donated by guests over the years—and its eclectic décor that reflects the character of Cayucos. Carol’s desserts, affectionately dubbed “Carolinis,” are the perfect way to end a meal, and the friendly, dependable atmosphere keeps customers coming back, whether for a hearty dinner or just dessert after dining elsewhere.

Rooted in Community

What truly sets the Sea Shanty apart is its connection to the community. Bill and Carol have always prioritized dependability, staying open all year and serving the locals as faithfully as the tourists. Their commitment extends beyond the restaurant, with their catering business helping create memorable moments for weddings and other special events.

Looking to the Future

As Carol and Bill slowly step back, they’re proud to see Lucas take the reins of this third-generation family business. While expansion isn’t in the cards, the legacy of the Sea Shanty continues to thrive in its original, cherished location.

For Bill and Carol, the magic of the Sea Shanty is inseparable from the magic of Cayucos. “Living here,” Carol says, “we discovered what a special and magical place this is.” And thanks to their passion, hard work, and love for the community, the Sea Shanty remains a shining example of what makes Cayucos so special.

Welcome to the Sea Shanty, where every visit feels like coming home.
